Yes, some Eaton UPS batteries can be replaced without shutting down the UPS or disconnecting the equipment it protects. These are known as hot-swappable UPS batteries.

However, this does not apply to every Eaton model or installation. Whether an Eaton battery replacement can be completed while the UPS remains operational depends on the UPS design, battery configuration and condition of the wider power system.

Crucially, batteries should not be disconnected while the UPS is operating in battery mode. For business-critical equipment, it is also important to assess the risk before carrying out any battery work.

What are hot-swappable Eaton UPS batteries?

Hot-swappable batteries are designed so that a compatible battery pack can be removed and replaced while the UPS continues supplying power to the connected load.

Several Eaton UPS ranges use hot-swappable internal batteries or external battery modules. Eaton documentation for models within its 5PX and 9PX ranges, for example, confirms that battery replacement can be completed without turning off the UPS or disconnecting the load.

This can be especially valuable in server rooms, communications environments and other locations where shutting down equipment purely for an Eaton battery replacement would cause unnecessary disruption.

Hot-swappable does not, however, mean that every battery can simply be removed without checking the UPS status and manufacturer guidance first.

Can the UPS still protect equipment during battery replacement?

The UPS can continue to supply the critical load during a supported hot-swap procedure, but its battery backup protection may be temporarily reduced while the replacement takes place.

This distinction matters.

If the mains supply fails while the existing battery pack is disconnected, the UPS may not have the normal battery autonomy available to support connected equipment. The level of protection will depend on the UPS configuration and whether additional battery strings or Extended Battery Modules (EBMs) are installed.

For this reason, a live battery replacement should be planned rather than treated as routine maintenance that carries no operational risk.

Check the Eaton UPS model first

Before ordering replacement UPS batteries, identify the exact Eaton UPS model and its current battery configuration.

Two UPS systems from the same manufacturer can have very different requirements. You may be dealing with an internal battery cartridge, multiple battery packs or one or more external battery modules.

The replacement battery must be compatible with the UPS and match the required specifications. Using the UPS model number or battery part number is one of the simplest ways to identify the correct replacement.

At UPS Battery Shop, we make this easier by allowing customers to search for replacement batteries by UPS brand and model or by battery part number. If you are unsure which Eaton replacement battery you need, our team can also help identify the appropriate option.

When should an Eaton UPS be shut down?

Even where hot-swappable battery replacement is supported, there are situations where shutting down the UPS may be the more appropriate approach.

This may include cases where the UPS has another fault, the battery connections show signs of damage, the installation differs from the standard configuration or there is uncertainty about the condition of the equipment.

A controlled shutdown may also be preferred where the connected equipment can be taken offline safely and there is no reason to carry out the work live.

The manufacturer’s instructions for the specific Eaton UPS should always take priority. Eaton explicitly warns that batteries must not be disconnected while the UPS itself is operating in battery mode.

Maintenance bypass and critical loads

For more complex installations, battery replacement should be considered as part of the wider power protection strategy.

A maintenance bypass can provide an alternative route for supplying the connected load while UPS maintenance is carried out. Depending on the system, this can allow engineers to work on UPS equipment while keeping essential systems powered.

This becomes particularly important where servers, network equipment or other critical loads cannot tolerate unexpected downtime.

External Battery Modules can add another consideration. Where several battery packs operate together, their age, condition and configuration should be assessed before deciding which batteries to replace.

Is replacing hot-swappable batteries a DIY job?

The fact that a battery is hot-swappable does not automatically mean it should be replaced by an inexperienced person.

UPS batteries can deliver high short-circuit currents, and battery packs can be extremely heavy. Eaton’s own guidance states that servicing should be carried out by personnel who understand batteries and the required safety precautions.

For smaller UPS systems, purchasing the correct replacement battery and following the manufacturer’s procedure may be appropriate. Larger systems, critical installations or more complicated battery arrangements may benefit from professional replacement.

Eaton battery replacement from UPS Battery Shop

At UPS Battery Shop, we supply replacement UPS batteries for a wide range of Eaton systems and can help customers identify the correct battery for their UPS.

We also offer an on-site UPS battery replacement service through our experienced engineers. Battery replacements can be carried out across different UPS makes and models, either during normal working hours or out of hours where required to minimise disruption.

Our services can also include UPS battery testing, health checks and the removal of old batteries for appropriate disposal and recycling.

So, can Eaton UPS batteries be replaced without shutting down the UPS? In many compatible Eaton systems, yes. But the correct procedure depends on the model, battery configuration and operating conditions. Checking these factors before starting an Eaton battery replacement helps protect both the UPS and the equipment relying on it.

Battery Replacement Service

Our engineers can carry out on site UPS battery replacements for all makes and models of uninterruptible power supply during normal office hours, or out of hours with minimal fuss or interruption to your business. Replacement UPS batteries can also be replaced during a maintenance visit or as part of a UPS health check.

Old UPS batteries must be disposed of safely and in accordance with special waste regulations. At Source UPS, we can collect your old UPS batteries for certified disposal and offer a battery removal service for larger UPS systems.
