A shorter-than-expected runtime for Riello Vision UPS is usually caused by ageing batteries. It can also be caused by increased electrical load, high operating temperatures or a battery that is not charging correctly. In many cases, replacing the batteries restores the backup time, but it is important to identify the cause before ordering a replacement.

At UPS Battery Shop, we supply and fit replacement batteries for Riello Vision UPS systems throughout the UK.

We can help you identify the correct battery kit for your exact UPS model, and we also offer professional battery replacement services for businesses that would prefer us to complete the work onsite.

What affects Riello Vision UPS runtime?

The runtime of a Riello Vision UPS is the length of time it can continue powering connected equipment after the mains supply fails. This backup time is not fixed. It depends on the condition of the batteries, the total power demand of the connected equipment and the environment in which the UPS is operating.

A UPS that originally provided 20 minutes of backup may eventually provide only a few minutes if the batteries have lost capacity. Equally, adding extra computers, monitors, servers or networking equipment can reduce runtime even when the battery is still in reasonable condition.

Are the UPS batteries reaching the end of their life?

The age of batteries is one of the most common reasons for reduced UPS runtime.

Riello Vision units typically use sealed lead-acid batteries, also known as VRLA batteries. These batteries gradually lose their ability to store energy, even when the UPS has rarely been used during a power cut.

As a battery ages, you may notice:

  • Shorter backup time
  • A battery warning or indication there’s a fault
  • An audible alarm
  • The UPS shutting down soon after losing mains power
  • A failed battery self-test
  • Batteries taking longer to recharge

A UPS battery can appear to be fully charged while still having very little usable capacity. The front display may show a high charge level, but the voltage can drop quickly as soon as the UPS takes over during an outage.

At UPS Battery Shop, we supply complete Riello Vision battery replacement kits rather than encouraging customers to mix old and new batteries. Replacing the full matched set helps ensure consistent performance across the battery string.

Has the load on your Riello Vision UPS increased?

Your Riello UPS runtime will fall if more equipment is connected to it.

For example, a UPS that was originally supporting one computer and a monitor may later be used for several workstations, network switches or other devices. Even small additions can make a noticeable difference to backup time.

Check the load reading on the UPS display or through any connected monitoring software. If the UPS is operating close to its maximum rated capacity, reduced runtime may be expected.

You should also confirm that only essential equipment is connected to the battery-backed sockets. Printers, heaters and other high-consumption devices can place a heavy load on a UPS and may not need battery protection.

The temperature and operating conditions

High temperatures can significantly shorten the service life of sealed lead-acid UPS batteries.

Riello Vision batteries are designed to operate within a suitable range of temperatures, but consistently warm environments accelerate battery deterioration. A UPS positioned inside a crowded cabinet, next to a radiator or in a poorly ventilated server room may experience faster battery ageing.

Dust can also restrict airflow and increase the internal temperature of the UPS. Make sure ventilation openings are clear and that the unit has enough space around it for heat to escape.

Moving the UPS to a cooler location will not restore capacity that has already been lost, but it can help protect a new set of replacement batteries.

Could there be a charging problem?

Sometimes, poor runtime is not caused solely by worn out batteries. The UPS may not be charging them correctly.

An issue with charging may be present if the battery level remains low after the UPS has been connected to mains power for the recommended charging period. Loose battery connectors, damaged internal cables or a fault within the charging circuit can also affect performance.

After replacing a battery, the new batteries should be allowed to charge fully before the runtime is assessed. Testing the UPS too soon can produce misleading results.

Where the batteries are new but the runtime remains unusually short, the UPS itself may need further inspection.

Is the expected runtime realistic?

Published runtime figures are usually based on a specific load. They do not mean the UPS will provide the same backup time in every installation.

A lower load generally produces a longer runtime, while a higher load reduces it. Battery age, temperature and the type of connected equipment can also affect the result.

It is therefore useful to compare the current load with the load used in the manufacturer’s runtime estimate. If your Riello Vision UPS is supporting more equipment than before, a drop in backup time may be normal rather than a sign of a fault.

How can I test my Riello Vision UPS battery?

Many Riello Vision UPS models offer a battery self-test through the front panel or monitoring software. This can help identify a weak or failed battery.

However, a self-test does not always reveal the full extent of capacity loss. A battery may pass a brief test but still provide insufficient runtime during a longer mains failure.

A controlled runtime test can provide a clearer picture, but it should only be carried out when it is safe to do so. Critical equipment should not be placed at risk simply to test the batteries.

For business-critical systems, professional testing and replacement may be the safer option.

Replacing your old Riello batteries

If your batteries are old, damaged or no longer providing enough backup time, replacement is usually the most practical solution.

The correct battery type depends on the exact Riello Vision model. Different units may use different battery capacities, quantities and connector arrangements, so it is important not to choose a replacement based on appearance alone.

At UPS Battery Shop, we make it easier to find the correct Riello battery replacement by model. We supply batteries from established manufacturers, including Yuasa, FIAMM and CSB, and we can also help when a model is not listed on our website.

We offer supply-only replacement kits as well as a professional fitting service. Our team can remove the old batteries, install the new matched set and help make sure the UPS is operating correctly afterwards.

When should you seek professional help?

You should consider professional support if the UPS protects critical systems, the batteries are difficult to access or you are unsure which replacement kit is required.

You should also seek advice if new batteries do not improve the runtime, the UPS continues to show a fault or there are signs of swelling, leakage or heat damage.
